IDRE-HASIS Digital Project Pipeline Information Guide (Steps 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9)

Step 5. Grant Writing Support

The IDRE-HASIS team can consult on and sometimes contribute to grant writing for the further development of the project, commitment and capacity of campus partners permitting. Parts of the proposal writing can be taken on by the IDRE-HASIS team if so decided during the individual consultations.

Every grant application is different, but in general you can expect to address the following points in your proposal: succinct statement of the problem (including its relevance to advancing an academic field), proposed solution (project narrative), review of relevant existing digital projects and underlying technologies, methodology, project team roster and rationale for composition of the team, audience, work plan, budget, and a budget narrative detailing proposed expenditures and a justification of these expenditures. Appendices may include project support information such as the participants’ CVs, letters of commitment, relevant bibliography, project or workflow mock-ups, and a statement about institutional cyberinfrastructure necessary for realizing your project.  You may wish to mention IDRE-HASIS in the grant application as an indication of institutional support. Staff time is usually a large portion of any project budget and is usually split between cost-sharing (the amount UCLA is contributing toward the project) and direct funding (the amount provided by the funding agency). While a grant application does not guarantee funding, commitments of staff time must be considered carefully when crafting a successful application.

The UCLA Office of Contracts and Grants and the appropriate administrative unit for your department or research group must approve all extramural grant proposals. Once you have consulted with the IDRE-HASIS team, you should contact the Office of Contracts and Grants as well as the administrative units that will help you develop the budget for your grant proposal.  Realize that these steps are time consuming and thus the grant application will have to be completed well in advance of the due date.
