IDRE-HASIS Digital Project Pipeline

Historically, UCLA faculty in the IDRE-HASIS focus area have been left to shop their project ideas around to different technology units in order to access the valuable resources available on campus for advancing digital projects. This online information guide and project pipeline reflects a commitment from campus partners, faculty, and IT staff to actively coordinate support for digital projects and establish efficient and equitable ways to advance faculty-generated project ideas. Our goal is to provide a clear path for faculty research and curricular projects that involve digital technologies. The pipeline will function as a conduit for the stewardship of digital projects as they move from incubation and development into maturity, maintenance, and preservation.

The Main Goals in Developing the Pipeline

  1. Provide faculty a single access point for staff resources and expertise in developing digital research and curricular projects
  2. Enhance communication between campus organizations involved in similar functions related to project development
  3. Coordinate work efforts across the various participating organizations for inter-disciplinary projects
  4. Create a mechanism to allocate staff resources and expertise in an efficient and thoughtful manner
  5. Introduce faculty oversight into the digital project development cycle
  6. Create a mechanism for forecasting workload across the participating organizations
  7. Provide a ‘redirect’ option for participating organizations when approached with projects outside their mandates

IDRE-HASIS Project Pipeline FAQ

  • I have an idea for a digital project, how do I get started? E-mail an IDRE-HASIS team member and request a consultation appointment. Describe your project ideas as thoroughly as possible as outlined in step 2 of the Digital Project Pipeline Information Guide below. Based on the information you provide, your IDRE-HASIS contact will advise you on the best strategy to move your project forward, and help steer you to appropriate available resources on campus and extramural funding opportunities.
  • Is money available through IDRE-HASIS for my project? Not directly. But the IDRE-HASIS team can help you identify funding sources both on and off campus, and – with authorization from the IDRE-HASIS faculty committee – you may be eligible for access to staff and computing resources. You may also submit an application to the annual call for IDRE Focused Research Projects.
  • What's the deadline for submitting project ideas? There is no deadline. It is our mission to foster innovative digital projects at UCLA, and we will work with you on your schedule.

Digital Project Pipeline Information Guide

Digital projects can range from simple tasks that solve a single research or instructional need to highly complex, time-intensive endeavors that require significant commitments from the project faculty, IT staff, and the institution. The following pages outline the stages of a typical project from planning and development through maintenance and archiving, and details how to request staff and infrastructure resources from the IDRE-HASIS consortium. All resource requests are vetted periodically in the development process by a committee of faculty representing each of the participating departments. Should resources be allocated to support your project, a memoradum of understanding will be generated by the IDRE-HASIS team to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the participating entities. This information guide addresses how the IDRE-HASIS consortium can help advance your research and instructional goals. All projects are different and will require different levels and types of support, so this process will vary depending on the scale and complexity of your project. The basic elements, however, such as making a task assessment and technology review, will apply to any project.

1. Digital Project Overview
2. Information Sessions, Consultation Request, and Individual Consultation
3. Project Review, Assessment, and Recommendation
4. Project Planning
5. Grant Writing Support
6. Securing a Commitment to Your Digital Project (MOU)
7. Project Initiation and Preparation
8. Project Development
9. Concluding Your Digital Project

IDRE-HASIS Research Support

Faculty and researchers working on digital research questions are also eligible to receive IDRE staff and resource support through the annual IDRE Call for Focused Research Projects.
